There’s a sweet spot in the e-bike market that’s getting harder to ignore: the $1,000 to $2,000 range where moped-style bikes deliver surprisingly good performance without demanding top-tier budgets. The GOTRAX Mustang lands right in that pocket, and after putting it through its paces, it’s clear this bike is aiming to be the benchmark for affordable moto-styled rides.
Moped-style e-bikes have exploded in popularity over the last couple of years, and for good reason. They look cool, they’re approachable for new riders, and they offer a riding experience that sits somewhere between a traditional bicycle and an electric motorcycle. The trick is finding one that doesn’t force you to compromise on safety, range, or build quality just because you’re not spending three grand.
The Mustang checks a lot of boxes. It’s powered by a 750W rear hub motor with 90 Nm of torque — not class-leading on paper, but in practice it punches above its weight thanks to the bike’s relatively light 78-pound frame. Most competitors in this category tip the scales closer to 85 pounds, and that weight savings makes a real difference. The bike accelerates smoothly, climbs hills with confidence, and never feels like it’s struggling to keep up.
Range is where the Mustang really shines. GOTRAX packed a 720 Wh LG battery into the frame — fully integrated into the downtube, which gives the bike a much cleaner look than externally mounted packs found on many rivals. In throttle-only testing, the Mustang covered 28.7 miles on a single charge, one of the best results the Electric Bike Report team has recorded from a moped-style e-bike. For context, the average in this category hovers around 24 miles. That extra four-plus miles is meaningful for commuters and weekend cruisers alike.
The bike also features a torque-sensing pedal assist system with five levels, hydraulic Tektro disc brakes with 180mm rotors, and a dual-crown suspension fork with 80mm of travel. The color display is a nice touch at this price point, offering a clean, readable interface. GOTRAX even includes a small storage compartment that mounts to the frame, which is a thoughtful addition for stashing a lock or phone.
Handling is nimble — surprisingly so for a chunky-tired moped-style bike. The short wheelbase and lower weight make it easy to throw around corners, and the BMX-style handlebars give plenty of leverage for steering. It’s the kind of ride that encourages you to take the long way home.
No bike is perfect, and the Mustang has a few areas worth noting. The saddle is on the small side, and the fixed moped seating position isn’t great for pedaling — you’ll want to rely on the throttle or PAS for most of your movement. The bar-based battery indicator could also benefit from a percentage readout, as estimating remaining range by counting bars isn’t ideal. And while our test bike was limited to 20 mph, GOTRAX says future production models will unlock 25 mph pedal assist, which brings it more in line with Class 3 expectations.
At roughly $1,500, the GOTRAX Mustang delivers a compelling package: strong range, safe and controlled power delivery, solid components, and head-turning looks. For riders looking to dip into the moped-style e-bike world without breaking the bank, this is one of the strongest options available right now.
